Everything You Need to Know About Tulips

There’s a moment every year, usually sometime in late January, when you bring tulips home, place them in a vase, and the whole room feels different.

That’s the magic of tulips: they’re the floral equivalent of the promise of a new season. Whether you’re treating yourself, sending someone a cheerful tulips delivery or filling your favourite vase, here’s everything we adore about these joyful stems.

What Do Tulips Symbolise?

Tulips have their own language that’s soft, gentle, and hopeful. They symbolise the joy and charm of new beginnings, fresh starts and resets, hope after a long winter, and the beauty of becoming. They’re the evocative spring flowers for “thinking of you,” “you’ve got this,” and “here’s to what’s next.”

Why Do We Love Tulips?

Tulips don’t follow the rules like other flowers. They keep growing after they’re cut, stretching and curving towards the light like tiny dancers. Each stem has a personality - some dramatic, some shy, some determined to bend in every direction at once. They brighten a room instantly, look beautiful at every stage, bring easy joy with no styling fuss, and turn an ordinary vase into a spring moment. Fresh tulips are basically an instant mood-lift that you can put on your kitchen table.

What Are the Most Popular Tulip Colours?

Pink Tulips

Soft, sweet, and affectionate. Perfect for sisters, best friends, and gentle souls.

White Tulips

Clean, calm, and thoughtful. The ideal choice for fresh starts.

Black Tulips

Deep velvet and almost black. Dramatic, striking, and enchantingly modern.

Blue Tulips

They don’t truly exist, but soft lilacs and cool mauves offer the same serene, dreamy feel.

Colourful Tulips

An instant hit of joy. Ideal for an “it’s grey outside but not in here” moment.

Trending: Most-Loved Tulip Types

Queen of the Night Tulip

Iconic, sultry, and near-black, this queen is one of the most in-demand modern varieties.

Tulip Ballerina

Tall, elegant, and vividly orange, this bright stem looks like it’s mid-pirouette.

What Is the Best Vase for Tulips?

The ideal vase for tulips has a narrower neck to support tall, lively stems, a medium height so they can stretch naturally, and a solid base - because tulips are enthusiastic drinkers.

The best shapes include a classic tulip vase, a simple cylinder, or a cosy kitchen-style jug. Wide bowls encourage floppy, dramatic tulips — lovely if that’s the look you’re going for, but not necessarily ideal for structural integrity.

How Do I Arrange Tulips?

You can arrange tulips in whichever way you fancy, of course, but if you follow these easy steps, you’ll be sure to make the most of them:

  • First, trim 1-2cm off each stem at a slight angle.
  • Fill your vase with cool water, that’s their favourite.
  • Make sure to remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline.
  • Tulips follow the light, so rotate your vase daily to make them stretch and bend as you like.
  • To keep them happy and healthy, refresh their water every two days, re-trim, and add flower food.

With a little attention, tulips can last up to 10 days in your vase and return plenty of beauty.

A Little Expert Tip

The perfect way to wake up your tulips when you first receive them is to rehydrate them overnight. For the best results, wrap them upright in paper and leave them soaking for a bit - they take up water in that position, which then helps them stay upright and prevents drooping once you transfer them into your vase.

Did you know?

You can reflex your tulips just like you can your roses to give them a different, more contemporary look. Once your petals have softened a little after a few days, gently pull them back towards the stem to achieve a fuller, more ruffled appearance.

Tulips Delivery: When to Send Them?

Tulips are wonderfully versatile and mood-lifting. They’re perfect for New Year resets, early spring moments, birthdays, spontaneous surprises, self-care, or any time you want to send colour and optimism. A good tulips delivery should arrive fresh and mostly in bud, with sturdy stems, cool and well-hydrated, and with delivery updates.
